OXFORD, GA. – A dominating performance by Sean Wickham (SO/Monroe, NC) helped the Oxford College men's basketball team pull off a victory on Sophomore Day as they downed the visiting Georgia Highland Diamonds Saturday afternoon, 96 to 93.
Wickham led the way in dominating fashion with 33 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists. Fellow Sophomore Robbie Wainio (Lithia, FL) poured in 20 points, and sophomore captain Kyle Brown (Wilmington, Delaware) scored 16 points, 7 rebounds and 7 steals.
As a team, Oxford shot 56.7 percent from the field and 8 of 16 from three point range. "We worked extremely hard on shooting this week and it paid off," commented head coach Roderick Stubbs. "We are proud of our sophomores and they did not want to lose on their day."
The Eagles used their hot shooting and tough defense to jump out to a 48-35 halftime lead. However, the Diamond did not have an ounce of quit in them and mustered a huge 2nd half effort. They tied the game at 76 all with 6:58 seconds to go and held their biggest lead of the game of four points with 4:33 left in regulation.
The Eagles quickly regrouped as they went back to Sean Wickham and he scored the next 8 points for the Eagles.
Oxford end their regular season on Monday at home for Alumni Night versus the Barons of Brewton Parker JV. The Eagles and Barons are set to tipoff at 7:30pm.
